Over the last couple of years, I have been working on crafting my photographic style not just in terms of shooting but also the way I color grade my images and make all my work look cohesive. During my initial years of working as a wedding photographer and having to deal with hundreds if not thousands of RAW Images, it was a very tedious process to get into the processing engines ( Lightroom is what I started off with ), tweak the settings to make the images look better and having to repeat the same process N times. The “copy and paste settings” option eased the process a bit but there was no workaround for all the creative settings that would get toggled as per the presets developed until “ Profiles “ came into picture and changed the workflow forever.

With over 4 years of International Retouching Standards exposure and a decade of working with colors on Lightroom, I’d have to admit Profiles have been a game changer in my editing process. Now, what’s the difference between Profiles and Presets ?

Lightroom Preset changes the settings inside the Develop Module. This can be as little as changing the exposure setting or changing the overall look of the photo from top to bottom. Lightroom Profile changes the look of a photo just like a preset but it does not change any settings inside the Develop Module. So you have FULL control over the image in terms of the Exposure, Highlight and Shadow retention and Dynamic Range.

WHY PROFILES ARE BETTER THAN PRESETS ?

☑️ Lightroom Profiles are Faster. Lightroom presets are lot less efficient than profiles. Every setting is another calculation for your CPU to process when using presets. Some are GPU accelerated, but not all. Lightroom profiles remap color. It's fast even on old computers.

☑️ Separate Color Grading from Retouching. Presets can, and often overwrite your develop settings. Imagine retouching a whole catalog only to redo it after using a poorly-made preset. Presets aren’t user friendly for photographers. Profiles don't touch your settings. What’s even fascinating is that you can always adjust the strength ( amount of effect ) of a profile on your image by using the Profile opacity slider.
